The northern lights are expected to be visible across the northern United States Monday night as space weather forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict slight geomagnetic activity over the next three days.

NOAA predicts minor to moderate geomagnetic storms—which are caused by solar activity disrupting Earth’s upper atmosphere—to start Monday and continue through Wednesday.
NOAA forecast a Kp index, which measures global geomagnetic activity, at a high of 4.67 Monday and 5.6 on each Tuesday and Wednesday, suggesting the northern lights could be visible in the lower 48.
Forecasters expect a minor geomagnetic storm Monday, increasing to moderate on Tuesday and Wednesday night, meaning the “view line” for the aurora borealis will likely drop even lower later in the week.
NOAA also observed minor solar radiation storms Monday, which can cause the lights to stretch further from the poles.
Where Will The Northern Lights Be Visible?
The northern lights will have the best chance of being seen as far north as possible, but NOAA’s predicted “view line” for Thursday covers parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine. (See map below.)
