  • Anthropic registered AnthroPAC with the FEC on April 3, 2026, an employee-funded political action committee capped at $5,000 per contributor annually, to support candidates from both parties active on AI policy.
  • The filing comes as Anthropic battles the Pentagon over a cancelled US$200 million contract after the Defence Department labelled the company a “supply chain risk” for restricting Claude’s use in autonomous weapons.
  • AnthroPAC marks a step up from Anthropic’s US$20 million (AU$30.8 million) issue-advocacy donation in February 2026.

AI giant Anthropic recently filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to establish AnthroPAC, a separate segregated fund that will collect voluntary employee contributions to support candidates aligned with the company’s AI policy positions.

The PAC, registered under FEC ID C00946111 and headquartered at Anthropic’s 548 Market Street address in San Francisco, is funded exclusively by employee contributions capped at US$5,000 (AU$7,200) per person per year under federal law.

Treasurer Allison Rossi signed the filing and a bipartisan board of directors will oversee disbursements.

Targeting AI Policy Lawmakers

AnthroPAC stated its focus is backing current and emerging candidates from both parties who are active on artificial intelligence legislation.

Though Anthropic’s specific policy priorities include model transparency requirements, federal AI governance frameworks, targeted export controls on AI chips, and regulations for high-risk AI applications.

Interestingly, the filing arrives during an acute political dispute, when the Pentagon designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk” on Feb. 27, a declaration attributed to War Secretary Pete Hegseth under a Trump administration directive to phase out Anthropic services.

The move cancelled a reported US$200 million (AU$290 million) contract, triggered by Anthropic’s refusal to permit Claude to be deployed in autonomous lethal weapons systems and mass surveillance infrastructure.

Anthropic filed lawsuits on March 9, 2026, in California and Washington, D.C. A California federal judge subsequently blocked punitive government actions against the company; the Department of Justice appealed the ruling in early April.

The legal outcome will determine whether the Pentagon’s designation stands.
