President Donald Trump endorsed Andrew Cuomo in a post on Truth Social, just before New York City’s mayoral election. Trump’s support came as the city braced for a historic race. His message urged voters to back Cuomo over his progressive opponent, Zohran Mamdani.
Trump’s endorsement came on the evening of November 3, a day before the election. He made it clear that Cuomo was the only choice for New Yorkers.
Trump further stressed that Mamdani was not capable of leading the city. He emphasized that Cuomo, despite past controversies, had the experience to make a real difference. Trump claimed that voting for Curtis Sliwa would only help Mamdani.
In his post, Trump also warned that federal funding for New York City might be limited if Mamdani won. He said that federal contributions would only be available under “limited requirements.” Trump’s comments hinted at his lack of support for Mamdani’s progressive agenda.
Cuomo, who is running as an independent, received another endorsement from Innovate NY PAC. The group focuses on utilizing technology to address urban issues. Eddie Cullen, chair of Innovate NY PAC, praised Cuomo’s leadership qualities.
Cullen stated,
Despite Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo, Mamdani remains the favorite in the race. Polls on the decentralized prediction marketplace Polymarket show Mamdani with overwhelming support. Around 94% of bettors believe Mamdani will secure victory on November 3.
Trump’s endorsement is unlikely to sway the polls, as Cuomo lags behind Mamdani. However, Trump warned voters that a vote for Curtis Sliwa would effectively support Mamdani. “A vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani,” Trump stated firmly.
The race is expected to be one of the most consequential mayoral elections in the city’s history. Regardless of the outcome, the results will likely shape New York City’s future. As voters head to the polls, the stakes are higher than ever.
